German mp. Invented by Edmund Nebermann during the
1920s and named after the city of Berlin.
These mps may be used instead of the PAs or, you could
have four PAs and four BEs for each side etc. They have also been called ‘Anti-Pawns’
because they move and capture in the opposite way a
PA does so. Using BEs makes the game
highly original. Draws are rare. BEs have greater mobility
than PAs. A normal opening
strategy is for them to concentrate in the center of the board (B$A
and B$B). However, compared to a PA,
the BEs capturing power is diminished.
A BE can only defend one MP/mp.
Building a defense chain
is impossible which leads to many open files becoming
available. In the endgame,
BEs can be very dangerous as their path to the promotion
cell (:#$) is quite easy. A number of tournaments (called ‘Berlin Chess’) have been
held. Dr. C.C. Lytton, Hans Gruber and
FIDE have produced ‘Albums’ (problem positions) using
this endearing mp.

The Piececlopedia: Berolina Pawn - BE
Historic remarks
The Berolina Pawn (BE) was introduced by E. Nebermann
in 1926. The (BE) pawn is named after
the city of Berlin. It is one of the
most popular fairy chess pieces, because its
movement rules are a logical twist of the rules for the traditional pawn (PA).
Movement rules
Berolina pawns (PAs) can only move forward. When a Berolina pawn (BE) makes a
non-capturing move, it goes one square/cell diagonally forwards.
When a Berolina pawn is still on its original square/cell on the second row,
it can make a non-capturing move diagonally forwards of one or two
squares/cells - if it moves two squares/cells, the first square/cell must be
empty. A BE captures one square vertically forwards.
When a Berolina pawn has moved two squares/cells
forwards, the opponent has the possibility to take it en passant (the next move by the
opponent). A Berolina pawn of the
opponent may take it also on the square/cell that was passed by.
When a Berolina pawn reaches a promotion
cell, that is, a cell on the last row of the board at the opponents side, it
promotes. The owner of the Berolina
pawn may decide to which piece the pawn promotes. In general, the choice is between QU, RO, KT,
BS, or any non-standard non-royal
chess piece that is present in the array (but, of course, not a PA or BE).
Movement diagram
The positions where the BE can move to without taking
are marked with a green circle; the positions where the BE can move to with
taking are marked with a red circle.

Written by Hans Bodlaender.
Berolina-Plus Pawn
Historical Notes
The Berolina-Plus Pawn is a development of the Berolina
Pawn. It used in Berolina Plus Chess (which is just Orthochess with
Berolina-Plus Pawns replacing the Pawns).
Movement
The Berolina-Plus Pawn moves as Berolina pawn, but may also capture by a
step to the side. The Berolina-Plus
Pawn can make a double diagonal step without capturing as its first move.
Movement diagram
In the diagram below, the Berolina-Plus Pawn can move without capturing
to all the squares marked with a green circle. The red circles are used to mark the squares where Berolina-Plus
Pawn can move only to capture.

This is an
item in the Piececlopedia:
an overview of different (fairy) chess pieces.

As an service for our English chess friends this page lists chess
expressions and other common words used in the articles in German
language and their English translation. Of course it is not complete and not an
official dictionary. But we think it will help to understand the essential
chapters of Kaissiber.
