A BS obstructed by your own mps or a BS that is trapped (:tra) behind your own mps which are on cells the same colour as the BS (either XL or XD cells). If the mps are hemmed-in there will be cells of one colour (a colour weakness, :cow
) that neither the mps nor the BS can control. If you have one BS in the endgame try to keep your BS on the opposite coloured cells to your mps. Your BS will not be able to offer protection to the mps but will retain mobility. If you see yourself heading for a :bd-BS endgame, see if you can exchange this BS before such a position arises. See BS under Major Pieces. A BS who is blocked by its own mps because the mps are positioned on cells of the same colour as the BSs cell.If a BS is hemmed in by PAs,
and therefore has limited mobility, it is considered bad. Bad
bishop: a BS hemmed in by its own PAs, on the same colour
cells. Examples in
the Bishops
[link] handout and in the Canon.
A BS which runs along the same diagonals
as ones which its own PAs are on and thus block it in
and keep it from reaching its full potential.
Bad BS: the one that you still have left on the
board!
How Bad is Your Chess?

How
bad is your chess? No matter how bad you
play, there is someone who is worse. Here are some of my worst games (or my
opponents). With the popularity of chess
over the Internet, you can really find some bad players who play bad
chess. Most of bad chess is from bad openings.
Can
you get mated in 2
moves? It’s an old trap (Fool’s Mate), but do people
fall for it? In 1996 my Internet opponent, Mr NK, lost in
two moves after playing 1.f3 (not good) 1...e5 2.g4?? Qh4
mate. It could have been the Grob
with 1.g4 e5 2.f3?? Qh4 mate. If you
are going to play 1.f3, after 1...e5, play anything but 2.g4. Try 2.c4 or 2.e4 or 2.g3 or 2.Nh3, but not
2.g4.
Can
you be mated in
three moves?
In 1998 my Internet opponent, Cornwell, fell
for a 3 move mate after I played 1.e4 and my opponent played g5 (a Michael Basman specialty) 2.d4 f6?? 3.Qh5
mate. Black had to play 2...h6 or
2...Bg7 to make it a real game.
Here
is another mate in 3. Nerd
- Wall, Internet 1998. 1.f4 (giving me the Bird) 1...e5 (From’s
Gambit) 2.g3? (White should accept the gambit with 2.fxe5 or play the KIs Gambit with 2.e4) 2...exf4 3.gxf4?? Qh4
mate.
The
fianchettoed BS can be dangerous and you need to pay attention
to it’s threat.
The RO is worth more than the BS,
so avoid moves like this…….

reversed) 2.e3 (control the center and play. 2.e4) 2...Bb7 3.Bxb5?
Bxg2 and Black wins the RO.
Avoid
hanging two pieces at once. Jecates - Wall,
Internet 1996. 1.Nf3 (the Reti) 1...d5 2.e4?! (you have to know how to play the gambit) 2...exf4 3.Bb5+??
c6. Now what piece do you want to give me. White had to play 3.Ng5 to play the proper
gambit. White now threatens to win his PA back. Black
can try a variety of moves such as 3...f5 or 3...Nf6 or 3...Qd5 or 3...e5 or
3...Bf5. Just don’t play 3.Bb5+ and have
your pieces attacked by PAs, losing at least one of
them.
Wall - Fingers, Internet 1998. 1.e4 e5 2.f3 Bb4 3.c3 Qh4+? 4.g3,
and Black must lose a piece. Hanging the QU and a piece is a common trap.
Ronzel - Wall, Internet
1996. 1.e4 e5 2.Qg4? (don’t bring your QU out early like this) 2...Nc6 3.Bc4?? d5 and Black wins a piece (the BS). White’s QU is threatened by the Black BS on
c8 that was just exposed after 3...d5, threatening the White BS on c4 at the
same time. The moves could have also
been played 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 (BSs Opening) 2...Nc6
3.Qg4?? d5. Almost anything could be played
besides 3.Qg4 (which doesn’t even threaten mate like 3.Qf3 or 3.Qh5).
MastaAce - Wall, Internet 1999. 1.e4 c5 (the Sicilian Defense)
2.Bc4 (usually KTs are developed before BSs) 2...Nc6 3.Qg4? (what do they see
out there) d5 and now White must retreat the QU from attack of the Black BS on
c8 and lose his BS on c4.
Cicada - Wall, Internet 1998. 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 f5 3.Qf3 Nc6 4.Qxf5 (poisoned PA) 4...d5, attacking
the QU and BS at once.

3.Qg4 (threatening 4.Qxg7) 3...Kf8 4.Nf3?
d5, again threatening QU and BS.
Avoid
exposing your KI too early. DJR - Wall, Internet 1998.
1.h4?! (not the best
way to control the center) 1...e5 2.f3? (that’s going to expose the KI) 2...Be7 (attacking the Rook
Pawn on h4 twice. That should be a signal to protect it) 3.Nc3??
Bxh4+ and White can’t avoid mate. White
should have played Nc3 on his 2nd move. That would have been much better than
2.f3. Other 2nd moves could
have been 2.b3 or 2.d4 or 2.Nf3, but 2.f3 exposes the KI too much. After 2...Be7 White had to play 3.g3 to stay
in the game.
Here
is another example of exposing the KI.
Protect
your KI! Here is another exposed KI. Wall - Deaneo,

(not as aggressive as 1.e4, but I felt tired that day). 1...h6?! (take control of the center) 2.Bc4 f5?? 3.Qh5+ and White mates

an escape route for your pieces.
Sometimes the KT hops all over the board without thinking about an
escape route. This is one of the most
common traps.

3...dxc4 4.Bxc4 and 5.Qxf7 mate) 3...e4.
4.Qf4?? Bd6 trapping the QU. White has 13 legal QU moves and loses the QU
on all moves.
Of
course, one must avoid Scholar’s Mate with the BS and QU. Wall - Rumpleboy,

h5?! 2.Bc4 g6 3.Qf3 Bh6?? (or
3...Bg7) 4.Qxf7 mate.
Avoid
bringing out that QU too early, then getting attacked by threatening 2 pieces

e5 2.Qh5 Nc6 3.Bc4 (looking for an easy mate with 4.Qxf7). 3...g6 4.Qg4? (or 4.Qh3) d5, winning the BS if White wants to save the QU.

attacking QU and BS.
Watch
out for exposing your RO, a common trap.

After 5.g3 Qb4+ 6.c3 Qxb2 7.fxe3 Qxc3+, Black maintains his material advantage.
Avoid
hanging a piece because you forgot your opponent could check. Timotic - Wall, Internet 1999.
